John Boyd Dunlop is a Scottish veterinarian living in Belfast. His son complained that the cobbled streets made his hips sore as he biked to school. Dunlop solved his son's problem by inventing the inner tube and patented a pneumatic tire, which is essentially a hose tube inside an outer rubber tire with a tread. But it was withdrawn two years later due to a previous patent by Scottish inventor Robert William Thompson.
